Accomplished businessman and music producer Cordel ‘Skatta’ Burrell has disclosed that American R&B superstar Beyoncé has incorporated a sample from his iconic dancehall project, the Coolie Dance Riddim, into her music. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Skatta shared that he created the rhythm twenty-one years ago while sojourning in the U.S.
In his post, Skatta expressed his respect for Beyoncé, referring to her as the “Queen of Music”, and acknowledged her choice to incorporate music he created into her Renaissance World Tour. He shared that this adds to the many accolades he continues to receive for his work.
Skatta reminisced about the moment of creation, stating that he made the beat with headphones on his MPC2000 during a trip to New York in his friend’s living room in Yonkers.
The Coolie Dancehall Riddim compilation, featuring some of the biggest names in the reggae-dancehall genre, such as Elephant Man, Sean Paul, Bounty Killer, and Vybz Kartel, among others, was released in 2003. The project showcased the rhythmic prowess and creative talent of Skatta.
As part of her elaborate set on the ongoing Renaissance World Tour, Beyoncé and her dancers have been captivating audiences with a choreographed routine to her single “Move” from the 2022 Renaissance album. The song samples Nina Sky’s 2004 hit “Move Ya Body“, which, in turn, samples the Coolie Dancehall Riddim.
