Singer Nailah of the early 2000s dancehall group Brick & Lace, best known for their hit “Love Is Wicked“, is pushing back against assertions that she is a one-hit-wonder following claims made by a popular entertainment blog.
Taking to social media platform Tik Tok, the songstress, in an almost minute-long video, declared,
“I don’t know how I feel about being called a one-hit wonder; the other day myself, and Nyanda were featured on one of the bigger blogs, I can’t remember the name, in the one-hit-wonder __ they were doing a feature on one-hit-wonder artists. I! am not a one-hit-wonder artiste, OK!“
Alluding to her accomplishments, she continued, “I have penned some of the biggest records in particular, one in 2016, a song called ‘Light It Up’ that has over 2 billion streams, sorry I’m going to put some respect on my name. I also pen with my sisters, one of the biggest Latin records of 2015, which features Jennifer Lopez and Wisin & Yandel, a song called ‘Follow The Leader‘ __ ahmm… google my name I have more hits.”
Who is a one-hit-wonder? A one-hit wonder is an artist or band who achieves great success with a single popular song but fails to repeat that success with subsequent releases. This could be said about the group, considering they have never been able to replicate the success as recording artists of their first major hit, “Love Is Wicked“.
It is equally important for Nailah to understand that you can’t take the performance credit for songs written for other artists; also, having a lot of streams on a song can indicate its popularity but is not the only factor determining whether a record is considered a hit. Other factors, such as chart performance, radio airplay, and cultural impact, play a significant role in defining a hit song.
Brick & Lace is a Jamaican-American dancehall/R&B musical duo consisting of sisters Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne. Their name reflects the tough and soft sides of femininity. Brick & Lace originally signed to the Geffen label as a trio with their third sister Tasha. Nailah and Nyanda continue to perform while Tasha works behind the scenes and co-writes songs for the group.
