In the latest episode of American Masters and Firelight Media’s In the Making series, director Alicia G. Edwards provides an intimate look into the life and work of Walshy Fire. This Jamaican-American cultural icon is an international DJ, MC, producer, and one-third of the globally-renowned EDM group Major Lazer.
The 10-minute film follows Walshy from his childhood in Jamaica to his upbringing in Miami and his current role as the frontman and MC for Major Lazer. Edwards captures the electrifying energy of his performances, celebrating his Caribbean roots and taking us on a journey worldwide, from Miami party nights to recording studios in Brazil and the main stage at the world’s biggest music festivals.
Walshy Fire has used his platform to shed light on rising talents within the Caribbean, helping to launch the careers of artists such as Chronixx, Jesse Royal and Koffee, whose signature hit “Toast” he co-produced, among others. Vice also tapped him to host Season 2 of its Noisey Jamaica documentary series in 2014, exploring the dancehall and “reggae revival” movement taking the island by storm.
When not touring with Major Lazer, Walshy balances his time with solo DJ events around the globe, including his popular weekly music event Rum & Bass in Miami. In 2019, he released his debut solo album, Abeng (Mad Decent), which combines Caribbean and African sounds in a groundbreaking fusion.
