Nicki Minaj has announced the launch of her own record label under Republic Records, with Paddy Dukes as A&R, during her Queen Radio show on Amp.
The rap star explained that she wanted to “do it right” as she aims to replicate her success with other artists. “When I get behind an artist, y’all know how I do shit for people that’s not even signed to me. Imagine what I’ma do for the ones that’s signed,” Nicki said.
Nicki, who was signed to Young Money by Lil Wayne, emphasized the importance of a co-sign and having someone believe in you. She reflected on her own experience in the music industry and acknowledged the struggles that emerging artists face. “There’s no real person that believes in them. That’s like, ‘Nah, I’m gonna make it my business to see you shine’,” she said.
While Nicki has previously considered launching her own label, she waited until she felt she was “really ready to put these artists on” to avoid ruining anyone’s life. She introduced some of the first signees to her label during the show, including London Hill, Nana Fofie, Rico Danna, and Tate Kobang, who wrote the hook and is featured on her new single “Red Ruby Da Sleeze“. Nicki emphasized that her label will not be limited to rap or Black music and will feature a diverse roster of talent.
Nicki previously signed British singer-songwriter Parker Ighile a decade ago, who was featured on “Hell Yeah” from her 2012 album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up.
