During an interview at the 2024 BET Awards, where he performed “Jump” alongside Tyla and Gunna, Skillibeng named Vybz Kartel, himself, Aidonia, Masicka, and Alkaline as the top lyricists in Dancehall. While his choices received praise from some fans, others took to social media to express their disagreement, arguing that Skillibeng’s list overlooked some of Dancehall’s most respected lyricists.
Critics of Skillibeng’s list argue that it fails to acknowledge the contributions of artists like Busy Signal, Agent Sasco, Chronic Law, Govana, and Wasp. Busy Signal, for instance, is celebrated for his versatility and clever wordplay, which have made him a staple in the genre for over a decade. His ability to blend social commentary with catchy rhythms has earned him a loyal following and critical acclaim. Similarly, Agent Sasco, known for his sharp lyricism and thought-provoking content, has been a significant figure in Dancehall, influencing many younger artists with his depth and clarity.
Though newer to the scene, Chronic Law and Govana have also made substantial impacts with their intricate lyrics and storytelling abilities. Chronic Law’s introspective and often gritty narratives resonate deeply with fans, while Govana’s dynamic delivery and witty lines have set him apart as a formidable lyricist. Wasp, though perhaps less mainstream, has consistently delivered powerful performances that showcase his lyrical dexterity and unique style.
Fans collectively believe that while these are Skillibeng’s personal picks, he should have at least added Busy Signal, Agent Sasco, Chronic Law, Govana, and Wasp as honourable mentions. By including these artists in the conversation, one can argue that the landscape of Dancehall is richer and more diverse than Skillibeng’s list suggests. Each of these artists brings something unique to the genre, contributing to its evolution and maintaining its relevance on the global stage.
