In an unprecedented celebration of Reggae Month, South Florida will witness Jamaican music’s rich narrative during the inaugural Reggae Genealogy event on Saturday, February 10, 2024. Unfolding at Broward Mall in the City of Plantation from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., this outdoor concert, produced by Island SPACE Caribbean Museum, promises to be a bold homage chronicling Jamaican music’s origins, evolution, and enduring influence.
The event, tailored for families, shoppers, and fans of all ages, will unfold the comprehensive history of Jamaican music through a captivating blend of words, music, video, and live performances. The showcase will traverse the diverse genres that have shaped the Jamaican musical landscape, from Mento and Ska to Nyabinghi, Rocksteady, Lovers Rock, Dub, Reggae, and Dancehall. Moreover, it will spotlight the profound impact of Jamaican music on global genres such as Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, EDM, and Afrobeats.
Set against the backdrop of Broward Mall, one of South Florida’s premier shopping destinations, attendees can immerse themselves in the Reggae Genealogy experience while enjoying food and perusing artisan vendors both within the event area and inside the mall.
Amidst this celebration of Jamaican musical heritage, the Island SPACE Caribbean Museum will pay homage to three distinguished women who have significantly contributed to the global recognition of Jamaican music. These iconic women will be honoured with Lifetime Achievement awards during a special presentation at the Reggae Genealogy concert.
The esteemed recipients include Cedella Marley, CEO of the Marley Group of Companies and the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation, whose impact resonates globally. Marcia Griffiths hailed as the most respected female singer in reggae history, will be recognized for her enduring contributions. Additionally, Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin, the co-founder of VP Records, the largest global reggae music label, will receive accolades for her pivotal role in shaping the reggae industry.
