Dancehall artist Shokryme’s journey of personal and professional transformation is an inspiring tale that has captured the attention of the entertainment industry.
In 2020, an unfortunate incident resulted in his conviction on firearm-related charges and a subsequent three-year sentence. However, Shokryme’s determination to rise from the situation led to a significant transformation, not only in his personal life but also in his career. One of the remarkable changes in this journey is his transition from “Shokryme” to “SeySoh” as his stage name, a move driven by the desire to shed a negative connotation. This name change is just one of the many steps SeySoh has taken to overhaul his image and pursue a path of optimism and growth.
Shokryme’s decision to adopt the name “SeySoh” reflects his commitment to a fresh start. In an interview with Bridge 99FM he expressed his concerns about the negative associations people had with the old moniker, declaring,
“Yuh see right now when people hear Shokryme mi see a look inna dem eye and pon dem face like dem a expect this__ a just evilness rrrr. When yuh hear SeySoh now yuh a look fi hear weh him have fi offer now.”
Further stating, “Yuh can be anything, it nuh haffi be positive alone, but it’s a more palatable name.”
In contrast, “SeySoh” was chosen as a more palatable name, emphasizing the importance of perception in the music industry. This move echoes similar rebranding decisions by local entertainers, including his contemporary “Deablo,” now known as Govana, who experienced career growth and more positive interactions after changing his stage name in 2017.
SeySoh’s latest project, the EP “Change For The Better,” stands as a testament to his personal growth and reflection. During his time of incarceration and amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, he utilized this opportunity to introspect and visualize his musical aspirations. The seven-track set is a product of his desire to improve his life and bring his vision to fruition. It features a single collaboration with compatriot Laden on the track “Way Off,” showcasing the dynamic synergy between the two artists.
SeySoh’s EP features contributions from various creatives, including New York-based award-winning producer CJ The Chemist, known for his role in producing SeySoh’s 2017 hit “Gold.” The EP is distributed by OneRPM, ensuring a global reach. With themes of personal growth and redemption woven into the fabric of the project, SeySoh’s “Change For The Better” is expected to captivate a wide audience, marking an exciting new chapter in his musical journey.
