The popular dancehall song “Who Am I (Sim Simma)” by Jamaican superstar Beenie Man has sparked a viral trend on social media. People from different demographics, professions, and geographic locations are participating in the Sim Simma Challenge on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, including many celebrities. The challenge involves answering the catchy question from the song.
Originating from the song’s release in 1997, the challenge revolves around a video by actress Lala Anthony, who engages in video calls with her celebrity friends. The caller says, “Sim Simma,” and the person on the receiving end is expected to complete the line with “Who got the keys to my Bimma?” Celebrities like Ciara, Kim Kardashian, Kelly Rowland, and Vanessa Bryant have all been part of this entertaining trend, with more getting involved daily. Beenie Man himself has shared Lala’s video and urged his substantial Instagram following to join in and keep the challenge alive.
The challenge often evokes laughter and surprise as unexpected participants nail the lyrics to the dancehall hit, defying initial expectations, while others are left baffled trying to connect the dots.
Interestingly, the Sim Simma Challenge has gained momentum in the lead-up to the highly anticipated release of Beenie Man’s new 19-track “SIMMA,” alum unveiled today (Thursday, August 31, 2023). This album, released under the MD Music Group imprint, marks his first in seven years and follows his 2016 album “Unstoppable.” “SIMMA” features an impressive array of collaborators, including Busy Signal, Patoranking, Giggs, Ms Banks, Mya, Hood Celebrity, Dexta Daps, Shenseea, Bunji Garlin, Shaggy, Popcaan, Dre Island, Morgan Heritage, Sean Paul, Charly Black, Anthony Red Rose, Louie Culture, Stonebwoy, and Backroad Gee.
The anticipation for “Simma” has been building over the past two years, with production challenges leading to some delays. Nevertheless, with a career spanning several decades and numerous accomplishments, including a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, “Art and Life” (2000), Beenie Man’s seventeenth studio effort holds promise to be a captivating addition to his impressive discography.
