Popcaan, the Jamaican dancehall star, is gearing up for the release of the deluxe edition of his latest project, Great Is He. Originally released through OVO, the album has been praised for its revivified tracks, such as “We Caa Done” and “Aboboyaa,” setting the tone for summer.
However, Popcaan is not content with his current success, and he recently launched a new single called “Bend It Over” to promote the deluxe edition’s campaign. The utopian and sensual track provides a glimpse into what’s to come, and the deejay has confirmed that the deluxe edition will be available on March 31st.
During an interview with Crack Magazine, Popcaan spoke about his desire to see more Jamaican artists release complete albums. He believes that the music industry in Jamaica is too focused on singles and that artists should consider putting out more fleshed-out projects. “No one’s doing it,” he said. “I try to appeal to my Jamaican artists, telling all of them to put out more albums. People just see Jamaican music as singles.”
His desire to release complete albums reflects the Unruly Boss’s creative process. He has a wealth of music he wants to share with the world and does not want to be constrained by a label’s expectations. He has hinted that he will soon be exiting OVO to pursue his career as an independent artist. “I have so much music. The label can be weird sometimes. I love the label, but I don’t like them…But I’ll be independent soon,” he explained.
While Popcaan has not confirmed when this will happen, many believe the Great Is He deluxe edition could be one of his final offerings on the Drake-co-founded imprint.
