Jamaican songbird Kadian Blair, popularly known as Ikaya, has raised a few eyebrows with her latest single, “Self Defense.”Â
The song has sparked several heated debates on various platforms about domestic abuse and what should be the appropriate response to an unfaithful partner. Ikaya’s powerful message about standing up for oneself and claiming self-defence has resonated with many listeners, while others have criticized her for glorifying violence.
Despite the controversy surrounding the track, there’s no denying that “Self Defense” is a well-written and thought-provoking composition. It narrates a tale of a woman who has had enough of her partner’s abuse and infidelity and decides to take matters into her own hands.Â
The track is performed immaculately by Ikaya, who hails from the Waterhouse community in Jamaica.
“Self Defense” is featured on the Things & Time Riddim, a compilation produced by Pandemic Records. The rhythm compilation features talented artists, namely Chronic Law, Takeova, Jah Lama, Little Hero, Frass Khalifa, and Xip Boss. The record was officially released in January 2023 and has been enjoying an uptick in popularity among reggae and dancehall fans.
