International dancehall sensation Skillibeng on Wednesday evening walked away with a coveted MOBO award for the “Best Caribbean Music Act” at this year’s ceremony held at the OVO Arena in London, England.

Having one the biggest club bangers in the United Kingdom this year with “Whap Whap”, the Jamaican entertainer and first-time winner was also nominated for “Best International Act”; However, that category was won by Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy.

In celebrating their silver jubilee, the U.K based award ceremony made several changes, including replacing the “Best Reggae Act” category, now known as the “Best Caribbean Music Act“. The Reggae category was initially introduced in 1997.

Six Jamaicans, namely Koffee, Popcaan, Spice, Skillibeng, Shenseea and Sean Paul, were in contention for top honours in the revised category. Dancehall vocalist Shenseea came out on top at last year’s staging.

The MOBO Awards, founded in 1996, aims to recognise the outstanding contributions of music creatives of African ancestry in the United Kingdom. It celebrates the technical and creative accomplishments of the best British and worldwide artists in hip hop, grime, R&B/soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and Afrobeats.
