Dancehall icon Buju Banton has entered the debate over Brand Jamaica following Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness’ response to criticism of the government’s handling of hurricane relief resources after Hurricane Melissa. The controversy gained momentum after veteran deejay Beenie Man questioned the distribution of assistance to Jamaicans struggling to rebuild their homes and livelihoods. Holness subsequently defended the government’s recovery efforts and turned his attention to those he believes are damaging Jamaica’s international reputation while benefiting from its global appeal. Buju’s response has now brought the contribution of Jamaican artistes and creatives to the forefront of the discussion.

Addressing the criticism surrounding relief resources, Holness rejected allegations of wrongdoing and pledged that the disaster response would be managed with integrity and accountability. In Parliament, he declared: “This government will manage this disaster without any form of corruption, misdirection, maladministration, malfeasance, or misfeasance.” He also warned against spreading allegations that could undermine public confidence in the recovery process. His comments came amid wider public scrutiny of how assistance was being distributed and the support reaching communities affected by the hurricane.

The Prime Minister’s subsequent remarks on Brand Jamaica sharpened the debate. “It was a lie that was told on Jamaica by someone who benefits from Brand Jamaica,” Holness said, arguing that some individuals wave the national flag to attract audiences to their shows while simultaneously tearing down the country. He added that such actions would not help anyone secure an additional grant and insisted that the issue needed to be addressed publicly. “Unfortunately I am the only one that is willing to say it,” he declared.

Buju Banton’s response shifts the focus to the role reggae and dancehall artistes have played in promoting Jamaica internationally for decades. The headline framing of his position captures the central argument: “We Have Been Pushing Brand Jamaica Long Before You Enter Politics”. Jamaican musicians have helped introduce the island’s music, language and cultural identity to audiences worldwide, alongside the achievements of athletes, dancers and other creatives. The exchange raises questions about how these contributions should be recognised in discussions about the country’s international image and who has helped build its reputation.

The dispute brings together two issues that have generated public discussion: accountability in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa and the contribution of cultural ambassadors to Brand Jamaica. While the government has a role in protecting the country’s reputation and managing recovery resources, Jamaican artistes have long served as influential representatives of the island abroad. As the debate continues, the relationship between political leadership, cultural influence and national identity remains firmly in the spotlight.
