Dancehall star Aidonia says years of industry resistance tested his determination to succeed, claiming that difficulties securing radio airplay, performance bookings and support from key industry players forced him to find alternative ways to get his music to the public. Speaking with Chin of Soundchat Radio, the 4th Genna head honcho traced his struggles to approximately 2006, recalling how he and his team distributed thousands of CDs across the island while working to build his audience.

Aidonia explained that the challenges extended beyond radio, with access to producers, promoters, selectors and media personalities also proving difficult. According to the artiste, industry affiliations sometimes influenced who received opportunities, leaving him to fight for recognition despite his confidence in his musical ability. Reflecting on the experience, he said: “If me was a weak artist and weak youth, like I gave up long time.” His comments underscore the persistence he believes was necessary to navigate the competitive dancehall industry.

Rather than abandon his ambitions, Aidonia and his team embraced grassroots promotion, distributing music in communities including Cross Roads, Papine and Portmore. He said the strategy helped keep his songs circulating among listeners even when mainstream exposure was limited. The experience offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by emerging dancehall artistes before social media and digital streaming became central to music promotion.

The interview also revisits Aidonia’s early connections with Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer, with the deejay explaining that Kartel introduced him to the veteran artiste. He recalled that Bounty Killer’s endorsement and their musical collaboration helped him gain greater recognition. Despite tensions surrounding members and supporters of the Alliance, Aidonia said he maintained his relationships with both artistes and chose not to take sides when divisions emerged.

Aidonia’s account adds another chapter to the story of his career, highlighting the persistence, grassroots work and independence that helped shape his journey in dancehall. His conversation with Chin also raises broader questions about access, influence and opportunity within Jamaica’s music industry, while reminding fans that an artiste’s rise can involve years of work before wider recognition follows.
