As the first female artiste signed to Vybz Kartel’s GreedyLion/Vybz Kartel Muzik label, rising Dancehall songstress Shenequa says she wants to help challenge the perception that women in Reggae and Dancehall are limited to a certain level of success. And if there was ever any truth to that belief, she is determined to help change it.
The fast-rising Jamaican singer and songwriter made the bold declaration after officially joining Kartel’s label, a move that marks a major new chapter in her career. Shenequa said she wants her journey to challenge the idea that female artistes cannot reach the highest levels of the music industry. “I aim to change the perception that female Reggae/Dancehall artistes are limited to a certain level of success in the music industry. And if there was ever any truth to that perception, we will change it. With God, all things are possible,” she said.
For Shenequa, however, the signing is not simply about having one of Dancehall’s biggest names behind her. She remains focused on developing her own identity, sound and artistry. “Music, to me, is expressing how you feel on a beat. It’s never wrong or right. It’s an art, so just create your masterpiece and do it beautifully,” she explained. Her growing catalogue includes My Show and Emotionally Scarred, while her latest single continues to introduce her sound and personality to a wider audience.
Kartel, meanwhile, believes his newest signee is ready for the next level. “Shenequa is entering a new chapter. With the backing, visibility and creative energy, the team and I will be taking her career to another level, so stay tuned,” he said, while also teasing potential collaborations. With the Worl’ Boss now backing her ambition and Shenequa openly determined to challenge expectations surrounding female success in Dancehall, her next chapter could bring more than just new music.
