Jamaica will honour legendary coach Stephen Francis with a national Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 15 at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston. The announcement was made by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange following discussions with Francis’ brother Paul Francis, Bruce James, President of the MVP Track Club and other close associates.
Francis, who died on July 4 at the age of 64 after a period of illness, was one of the most influential figures in Jamaican athletics. As co-founder of the MVP Track & Field Club in 1999, he helped develop Olympic and World champions including Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Asafa Powell and Shericka Jackson, while playing a major role in Jamaica’s rise as a global sprinting powerhouse.
Minister Grange said further details about the tribute event will be announced at a later date. The celebration will give athletes, officials, fans and members of the sporting community an opportunity to remember Francis, whose coaching philosophy, technical expertise and commitment to Jamaican talent left a lasting impact on track and field.
Known affectionately as “Franno,” Francis was widely respected for his demanding approach, honesty and dedication to excellence. His legacy extends beyond the medals won by his athletes, with his work helping to strengthen Jamaica’s athletics programme and inspire future generations of competitors.
