Olympic sprint legend Usain Bolt brought tears, cheers and celebration to his alma mater Waldensia Primary and Infant School this week after surprising the institution’s 17 graduating students with JMD $100,000 each following their successful PEP exam results. The donation, totalling JMD $1.7 million, was announced during the school’s leaving ceremony at Waldensia Baptist Church, where emotional reactions erupted as Bolt’s lifelong commitment to uplifting his hometown community in Trelawny took centre stage.

The announcement instantly electrified the ceremony. “Each child will be leaving here this afternoon with $100,000!” a school official declared to thunderous applause in a video that quickly began circulating online. The official praised Bolt not only for his historic achievements on the track, but also for his continued generosity and dedication to helping young Jamaicans. “Usain Bolt is celebrated not only as one of the greatest sprinters but for his remarkable benevolence and generosity,” she said, adding that his compassion and humility continue to inspire people around the world.

School representatives also revealed that Bolt’s mother, Jennifer Bolt, played a key role in helping to secure the donation. The gesture added another emotional layer to the moment, particularly for families gathered to celebrate the students’ academic milestone. For many online, the move reinforced Bolt’s image as more than a global sports icon, but a hometown hero committed to investing in the next generation.

Meanwhile, Bolt later shared words of encouragement for the students through Facebook, congratulating the graduates from Sherwood Content for successfully passing their PEP exams. “Keep making your parents and community proud,” he wrote. The heartfelt contribution has since sparked widespread praise across Jamaican social media, with many hailing the eight-time Olympic gold medallist for continuing to give back to the community that helped shape his journey from rural Trelawny schoolboy to global superstar.
