Kendrick Lamar is poised to dominate the 51st Annual American Music Awards, leading with an impressive 10 nominations including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for GNX, and Song of the Year for his chart-topping diss anthem Not Like Us. The Compton lyricist also commands the Favourite Hip-Hop Song category with three entries—Like That (featuring Future and Metro Boomin), Luther (with SZA), and Not Like Us—cementing his reign in a year marked by high-profile rap beefs and lyrical mastery. This year’s ceremony, set for May 26, 2025, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, also welcomes three new competitive categories—Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Social Song of the Year—reflecting the show’s push to recognize shifting musical landscapes and fan engagement across digital platforms.

Among the most exciting developments is the continued recognition of Afrobeats, which has evolved from a regional genre to a global force. The Favourite Afrobeats Artist category—introduced in 2022 when Wizkid won the inaugural title—returns with a star-studded lineup: Wizkid, Rema, Tems, Asake, and South Africa’s Grammy-winning breakout Tyla. “Afrobeats is no longer a wave—it’s a movement,” says music historian Tola Onanuga. “Its rhythms are in commercials, movies, global playlists, and across festival stages.” According to Billboard, Afrobeats grew by over 34% in streaming volume globally in 2023 alone, with Nigerian artists increasingly charting on international platforms like the Billboard Hot 100 and Spotify Global Top 50.

The inclusion of the Afrobeats category speaks volumes about the genre’s international appeal and influence. Tyla’s win at the 2024 Grammys marked a watershed moment, following Tems’ 2023 Grammy for her feature on Wait for U with Future and Drake. “There’s no ceiling,” Tems told Rolling Stone last year. “We’re just getting started.” This year’s AMA nomination list reinforces that sentiment, spotlighting artists who have not only dominated airwaves across Africa but have also become fixtures on global stages.

Adding star power to the evening, Jennifer Lopez returns to host for the first time in a decade and is slated to perform, promising a high-energy show that blends nostalgia with current musical trends. With artists like Billie Eilish, Post Malone, Chappell Roan, and Shaboozey also earning top nods, and genre lines increasingly blurred, the 2025 AMAs seem set to be a celebration of both legacy and innovation—where hip-hop legends and Afrobeats trailblazers share the spotlight.
