Dancehall luminary Beenie Man is currently in the U.S., making moves as he embarks on his much anticipated King of the Dancehall tour. Stopping by The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 FM in New York, the legendary artist reflected on his enduring career, the legacy of his music, and the ongoing debate surrounding the “King of Dancehall” title. But it’s not just about the music; Beenie Man also used the platform to address questions thrown at him regarding the tension with Vybz Kartel, whose recent claims to the throne have added fuel to an already fiery rivalry.

During his The Breakfast Club interview, Beenie Man was asked about the name of his current tour and the ongoing King of Dancehall debate that has captivated fans. C0-host Jess Hilarious brought up the topic, referencing the back-and-forth between Beenie Man and Kartel, saying, “This is the dethroning tour right here!” Beenie, however, was quick to set the record straight. “I’m not dethroning anyone,” he responded. “I don’t come to talk about people. I’m a king because of my music and my longevity in the business, and I’m still here. I’ve been here since the ’80s, through the ’90s, and I’m still here, doing the same thing.” This remark was a clear defence of his position, emphasizing that his status as the King of Dancehall is not up for debate; it is a title earned over decades of consistent work and undeniable influence.

When asked whether his proclamation of being the King of Dancehall led to challenges from other artists, Beenie Man responded candidly, “I did not call myself the king. I was crowned King,” distinguishing the difference between self-claiming the title and having it bestowed upon him. His words reflect a deep respect for his peers in the industry, acknowledging that comparisons to newer artists are inevitable. He shared, “Every artist that has come into this music business since me, they’ve compared me to them. So it’s a great thing.”

The interview also addressed the tension with Vybz Kartel, who in recent months has made headlines with his assertions about the King of Dancehall title. Kartel’s refusal to engage in a lyrical clash with Beenie Man, as seen in his Instagram post, has only intensified the rivalry. Beenie, however, seems unbothered by the drama. His words during the interview reinforced that his focus remains on the music, not the feud. “I’m not fighting it, not disputing it,” he said, confidently standing by his legacy.
