Masicka is taking his dancehall success beyond the recording studio and international music charts, positioning himself as the driving force behind a major entertainment production in his hometown. Through his inaugural Forever 1NE Music Festival, scheduled for December 19 at Caymanas Park, the entertainer is creating an opportunity to bring live entertainment, commercial activity and greater visibility to Portmore. With government officials highlighting the potential for job creation, tourism exposure and business opportunities, the festival is emerging as an example of how Jamaican artistes can use their success to create opportunities beyond the stage.
For Masicka, the event carries a personal significance that extends beyond the business of entertainment. Speaking at Monday night’s official media launch at D’Ferrano Restaurant & Lounge Rooftop, he declared, “This a mi place, Portmore; yah so mi birth, so dis a history.” The dancehall star credited his team for helping to bring the project to life and described the opportunity to stage the festival in his birthplace as a meaningful way to give back. “With everything weh mi achieve inna mi career, me feel like a di right place to give back to,” he said.
The festival has also attracted support from key government representatives, who see potential for wider economic benefits. Alando Terrelonge, Member of Parliament for St Catherine East Central and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, highlighted Portmore’s potential as a destination for major events, commercial activity and employment opportunities. He noted that more than 200,000 people live in the municipality and argued that its identity should extend beyond that of a residential community. Meanwhile, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce Delano Seiveright described Masicka as a “game-changer”, while Minister of Culture and Sport Olivia “Babsy” Grange praised the artiste’s discipline and focus. Grange also stressed the commercial importance of the sector, reminding stakeholders that “Music is entertainment, but it’s also a business.”
The commercial and production partnerships behind Forever 1NE further underline the scale of the undertaking. Magnum Tonic Wine is partnering with the festival through J Wray & Nephew, while Main Event Entertainment Group is overseeing production preparations. Chief executive officer Solomon Sharpe disclosed that the production team had already conducted six or seven site visits and revised the venue layout several times. Gary Peart of Supreme Ventures, operators of Caymanas Park, also sees an opportunity to establish the property as a major entertainment destination beyond its traditional association with horse racing. The festival’s line-up will feature Masicka alongside dancehall artistes Dexta Daps and Shaneil Muir, reggae singer I-Wayne and additional surprise guests.
The event arrives as Masicka continues to build on the international success of his music career. His album Forever Reign, released through Def Jam Recordings, debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and spent two consecutive weeks in the Top 10. The project also held No. 1 positions on Apple Music in six territories in an October 17 chart snapshot. With the festival offering a platform for local business, live entertainment and Jamaican musical talent, Masicka’s ambition extends beyond headlining another concert. He is making a statement about what artistes can build when they turn their success into ownership, investment and opportunities at home. As he put it at the launch, “December 19 nah go normal.”
