Jamaican gospel singer Kevin Downswell is embracing musical experimentation on his fifth studio album, Joy Is Here, but insists that expanding his sound will never come at the expense of his Christian identity. Released on Friday, October 30, the 10-track project explores a broader musical landscape, incorporating contemporary influences, including trap-inspired production, while keeping Jesus at the centre of its message. Speaking with Entertainment Report, the Carry Me singer addressed the growing crossover between gospel and secular sounds, explaining that artists can explore different musical styles to reach wider audiences without compromising their beliefs.
Downswell described Joy Is Here as the most diverse project he has produced, with six featured collaborators contributing to its musical range. Among them are Minister Marion Hall, formerly known as Lady Saw, reggae singer Gramps Morgan and Kenyan gospel artiste Moji Shortbabaa. Reflecting on his collaboration with Hall, Downswell revealed that she was particularly impressed by the production of their song, which features a trap-influenced beat while retaining its worship elements. Hall reportedly told him she had never heard a song with that combination of sounds that still made her feel connected to worship. The album’s collaborations also reflect Downswell’s growing international reach, including his engagement with a Telegram community of approximately 700 members.
However, the singer is clear about where he draws the line between musical creativity and artistic compromise. Asked whether gospel performers should blur the boundaries between gospel and pop to attract secular listeners, Downswell maintained that different sounds can be used to influence people, provided the central message remains intact. “We can do anything to impact people, but you will never find me compromised,” he declared. He further explained that Jesus remains the centrepiece of his music, adding that his identity as an artiste would be lost if he attempted to become something other than who he is.
Beyond the music, Downswell also reflected on the responsibilities and expectations associated with being a gospel entertainer. Rejecting the idea that gospel singers must present themselves as flawless individuals, he said, “Just be yourself.” He described representing Christ both onstage and offstage as one of the greatest responsibilities anyone could carry. The singer also identified patience as a personal virtue he continues to work on, revealing an ambitious desire to purchase a house every month for someone in need by the middle of 2027. He described the declaration as an expression of faith, while acknowledging that he is learning to trust God’s timing in providing the resources to fulfil that vision.
With Joy Is Here, Kevin Downswell is signalling a willingness to push creative boundaries while remaining firmly rooted in his beliefs. The album represents another chapter in his musical journey, demonstrating that contemporary production and gospel ministry can coexist without losing sight of the message.
