Gospel powerhouse Kevin Downswell and soulful reggae vocalist Etana are among the most prominent names set to receive national recognition at Jamaica’s 2025 National Honours and Awards ceremony. Both artists will be conferred with the Order of Distinction (OD) in the rank of Officer, marking a significant milestone in their careers and a moment of celebration for the local music fraternity. The honours, to be presented on National Heroes Day, October 20, highlight their contributions to Jamaican culture and the global music scene.

Downswell, whose uplifting gospel anthems have echoed from Kingston to the diaspora, is being recognised for his inspirational work in gospel music both locally and internationally. Known for hits like You Make Me Stronger and Stronger, he has been a beacon of faith and resilience through song. “To be honoured by your country is one of the highest forms of validation,” Downswell shared on social media following the announcement. “This award is not just mine—it’s for every youth who dared to dream through music.”

Joining him in the spotlight is Etana, born Shauna McKenzie, whose distinctive voice and empowering lyrics have cemented her status as one of modern reggae’s most influential female artists. Often referred to as The Strong One, Etana’s rich discography blends roots reggae with soul and R&B influences, celebrating black womanhood, consciousness, and spiritual depth. Her OD award pays homage to a career marked by consistency, activism, and a relentless commitment to musical excellence.

The honours also reflect a poignant tribute to the past, as Garnet Silk—the beloved Rastafarian singer whose life was cut short in 1994—is being posthumously awarded the OD. Remembered for emotionally stirring tracks like Hello Mama Africa and Mama, Silk’s brief but powerful career left an indelible mark on ’90s conscious reggae. His award acknowledges not just the music he made, but the spiritual energy and social awareness he brought to the genre. “His voice was like no other—he sang with his soul,” one fan commented online.

Additional recipients include legendary producer King Jammy, who will be upgraded from OD to Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) for his pioneering role in the digital dancehall era, and acclaimed writer Olive Senior, also set to receive the CD for her contributions to Caribbean literature. With this year’s honours, Jamaica continues to celebrate those who have not only shaped the soundscape of the island but have carried its cultural torch across generations and borders.
