After more than three decades of global hits, Sean Paul says the secret to staying relevant may lie with a generation that was not even born when some of his biggest songs were released. As the Jamaican dancehall icon announces a three-city South Africa tour for December, he says Gen Z’s continued embrace of his music has helped keep him in what he calls a “youngevity loop”, proving that his catalogue continues to find new life on dancefloors and playlists around the world.

The Grammy Award-winning entertainer will bring his high-energy live show to Cape Town’s Grand Arena at GrandWest on December 3, before heading to the SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria on December 4 and closing the South African run at the Durban ICC on December 6. The shows will give fans a chance to hear career-defining hits including Get Busy, Temperature and We Be Burnin’, along with major collaborations such as Baby Boy.

Speaking recently about the strong Gen Z presence at his concerts, Sean Paul said it was particularly rewarding to see younger fans singing songs from albums released before many of them were born. “When I write these songs, I imagine people jumping up and having a good time … just singing and dancing,” he told The Gleaner, explaining that performing his music repeatedly has helped keep him in a “loop”, which he described as a “youngevity loop”. He also credited dancehall’s infectious and danceable nature for helping his music continue to connect with young audiences.

That cross-generational appeal is now set to meet South Africa’s summer entertainment season. Tickets for the three concerts start at R750, with only three South African dates currently confirmed. Blu Blood’s Shaaista and Osman Osman said they were excited to bring Sean Paul to the country, describing his music as something that “transcends generations, cultures and genres”.

For Sean Paul, whose career helped take Jamaican dancehall to mainstream audiences worldwide, the formula appears to be working. Three decades after his earliest hits, a new generation is still singing along, and this December, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban will get a first-hand taste of the “youngevity loop”.
