Despite Jamaica producing a steady stream of album releases in 2026, only four projects have secured a place on the prestigious Billboard Reggae Albums Chart so far. Vybz Kartel‘s God & Time, Buju Banton‘s Too Too Bad, Protoje‘s The Art of Acceptance and Alkaline‘s NPT are the only Jamaican albums to break onto the influential chart this year, highlighting both the increasingly competitive global music landscape and the enduring significance of a Billboard placement for reggae and dancehall artistes.

Alkaline opened the year’s Billboard run when his third studio album, NPT, debuted at No. 10 following its March 23 release through AutoBamb Records. The project, powered by tracks including Gyal Good, Graduate, Key Man and No Emotions, later climbed to No. 9, becoming the first dancehall album to reach the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart in 2026. The momentum continued in April as Protoje collected his sixth career Billboard Reggae Albums entry with The Art of Acceptance, which debuted at No. 9 and further strengthened his impressive chart legacy following previous successes including the chart-topping Ancient Future and A Matter of Time.

June belonged to Vybz Kartel, whose God & Time entered the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart at No. 6, the highest debut by a Jamaican release this year. Released through TJ Records and Vybz Kartel Muzik, the album features collaborations with Wizkid, Spice, Shenseea, Skillibeng, Mavado and Farruko, marking the dancehall icon’s 12th Billboard entry. The achievement arrived just days after Kartel earned five nominations at the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards, reinforcing his continued commercial strength and influence on the international stage.

Most recently, Buju Banton joined the year’s Billboard success stories when Too Too Bad, released on July 17, debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart dated August 1. The milestone followed strong performances on the U.S. iTunes Reggae Albums Chart and Worldwide iTunes Albums rankings while adding another chapter to the Grammy-winning artiste’s decorated career. The album also arrived amid Buju’s passionate defence of dancehall’s identity, with the reggae veteran urging artistes to innovate while preserving the genre’s cultural roots, famously declaring, “You cannot trap dancehall.”

With only four Jamaican albums reaching the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart so far in 2026, each entry has carried added significance. While the year has seen no shortage of local releases, the performances of Kartel, Buju Banton, Protoje and Alkaline underscore just how difficult it remains to convert domestic momentum into international chart success. As more projects are expected before the year closes, attention will now turn to which Jamaican artiste can become the fifth to join this exclusive Billboard list.
