Jamaican crooner Runkus is receiving major international acclaim after Billboard named his album Supernova among its “50 Best Albums of 2026 So Far,” alongside projects from Drake, Harry Styles, BTS and Bruno Mars. In its review, Billboard went even further, suggesting the Portmore-born creative “might have the best album from the Caribbean diaspora this year,” while praising the project’s fearless blend of dancehall, hip-hop and roots reggae across what it called “one of the year’s most thrilling front-to-back listens.”

Released on May 1 via Easy Star Records, Supernova marks another bold creative leap for Runkus, whose genre-bending approach has steadily earned him recognition both locally and internationally. The 13-track project features collaborations with reggae icon Peter Tosh and dancehall heavyweight Sean Paul, while weaving together themes of grief, ambition and Caribbean identity through futuristic and intergalactic metaphors. Billboard’s editorial team highlighted the album’s inventive production, specifically noting how Runkus fused the legendary “Punany” dancehall riddim with an astronomy lecture concept and seamlessly blended hip-hop with roots reggae on standout track “Ego Death.”

The recognition places Runkus in elite company. Other albums featured on Billboard’s mid-year best list include Drake’s Iceman, Bruno Mars’ The Romantic, BTS’ Arirang, Harry Styles’ Kiss All the Time. Disco Occasionally and Jill Scott’s To Whom It May Concern. Notably, Supernova stands as the only Jamaican reggae project included on the prestigious list so far this year, adding another milestone to what has already been a strong period for Caribbean music on the global stage.

Meanwhile, fans and music industry observers across social media have been celebrating the achievement as a major win for Jamaican creativity and alternative reggae music. Many praised Runkus for pushing boundaries sonically while remaining rooted in Caribbean culture. The Billboard endorsement is also expected to introduce the artiste to wider international audiences unfamiliar with his catalogue.

With Supernova now gaining momentum beyond the Caribbean, the spotlight surrounding Runkus continues to grow. As global interest in genre-fusing Caribbean acts rises, the Portmore native appears poised for one of the biggest breakthrough moments of his career.
