Dancehall legend Rodney ‘Bounty Killer’ Price is set to receive another notable honour recognising both his cultural influence and decades of community advocacy. The artiste, widely known as the “Poor People Governor,” will be presented with the Generational Impact: Guardian of the Culture Award later this month for his longstanding commitment to uplifting disenfranchised communities and shaping Jamaica’s musical legacy.
The award will be presented during the Uplift the Community Benefit Concert, scheduled for March 29 in Seaview Gardens as part of the Seaview Gardens Community Assistance Project. The event will include a free community day and health fair for residents, followed by a benefit concert aimed at raising funds for youth development initiatives in the area. According to event organiser Dwight Hermit, the recognition reflects both Bounty Killer’s musical impact and his real-world advocacy. “Bounty Killer represents the spirit of the people. His music speaks truth, but more importantly, his actions have always reflected a commitment to uplifting the community,” Hermit said.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Let Us S.O.A.R. (Students Overcoming Academic Roadblock), whose founder Sherone White said the honour is about cementing the artiste’s legacy beyond entertainment. “This moment is about legacy. Bounty Killer has spent decades defending culture, empowering artistes, and advocating for the people,” White explained. In tribute, organisers will also launch the Bounty Killer Generational Impact Scholarship, ensuring that his influence continues to benefit future generations.
Beginning this year, the scholarship will support two graduating students from Seaview Gardens Primary School — one boy and one girl — as they transition into high school. The programme reflects Bounty Killer’s long-standing dedication to mentorship, community development, and youth empowerment in Kingston. While globally recognised for his commanding voice and fearless dancehall anthems, the honour reinforces another side of the icon’s legacy: a cultural guardian whose impact reaches far beyond music.
