Renowned as the distinctive voice behind the Grammy Award-winning reggae ensemble Morgan Heritage, Peter “Peetah” Morgan, has died. The band announced his passing on Sunday, February 25, leaving fans and the music community mourning the loss of a beloved talent.

In a heartfelt statement issued by the band, they expressed their profound sorrow, describing Peter Morgan as not just a lead singer but also a cherished husband, father, son, and brother. The family extended gratitude for the outpouring of love and support while requesting privacy during this period of mourning. The cause of Peter’s death was not disclosed. He was 46 years old.

“It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son, and brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today. Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask your continued prayers as we go through this process. We also ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of healing.” – the group stated.

Reggae stalwarts Buju Banton and Tanya Stephens joined the music community in mourning Peter Morgan’s passing. Buju Banton, reminiscing about their shared journey and the impact of Morgan’s talent, expressed deep sadness over the loss of a reggae music superstar. Meanwhile, Tanya Stephens conveyed her sorrow with a simple yet poignant sad face emoji.

“I spent the last two weeks of your life with you, working on a very special project only to wake up today learning you took a short cut Peter. I am so saddened by this sudden turn of events. You are totally a reggae music superstar who gave from where our father said we should, our hearts. All those memories, all that laughter, all those tours. I am going to miss you Peter and I will comfort myself with this thought. You cannot come to us but we must come to where you are. Until then Peter, I love you. The brother I never had. ?” – Buju Banton wrote via Instagram

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Peter Morgan was part of the musical legacy of Jamaican singer Denroy Morgan, being one of his over twenty children. Morgan Heritage, comprising five Morgan siblings, was formed in 1994, later signing with MCA and releasing their debut album “Miracles” the same year. Following their initial success, the family relocated to Jamaica, further cementing their ties to their Jamaican roots.

Throughout their journey, the group experienced changes, with Peter, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan becoming the core members. Their collective efforts bore fruit with the Grammy-winning album “Strictly Roots” in 2015, followed by another Grammy nomination for “Avrakedabra” in 2018.

Peter Morgan’s voice, unmistakable and powerful, resonated through Morgan Heritage’s most significant hits, leaving an enduring imprint on reggae music. From anthems like “Don’t Haffi Dread (To Be Rasta)” to soul-stirring melodies such as “Down by the River” and “She’s Still Loving Me,” his contributions enriched the genre.

The passing of Peter Morgan marks the end of an era in reggae music, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide. As the music community mourns his loss, Peter Morgan’s contributions to the genre will forever be celebrated and remembered.
