Dancehall heavyweight Popcaan has added a historic new honour to his global legacy after being crowned a sub-chief in Ghana, marking a powerful cultural moment linking the Caribbean to the African continent. The Jamaican hitmaker was formally bestowed the traditional title “Nana Okofo Akro Kese,” meaning “great warrior chief,” during a ceremonial induction into a local chieftaincy system while on a recent visit to the West African nation.

Sharing images and videos from the ceremony on Instagram, the dancehall star expressed appreciation for the recognition, writing, “Nana is Grateful!!! Love and respect to my people. Together we push #KESE.” The honour reflects not only his musical impact but also his growing influence as a cultural ambassador connecting Jamaica and Africa through music, heritage, and diaspora engagement.

Popcaan’s connection to Ghana dates back several years. During his earlier visit for the historic diaspora initiative, the artist paid tribute to his ancestry at Cape Coast Castle, a symbolic gesture honouring the lives affected by the transatlantic slave trade. That emotional moment strengthened his relationship with the country and reinforced his ongoing message of cultural unity and identity within global dancehall.

Musically, the Unruly Boss continues to evolve. His fifth studio album, Nothing Without God, released in 2025, showcased a reflective side of the artist, blending contemporary dancehall with themes of faith and resilience. The new sub-chieftaincy title now adds another layer to his legacy, positioning him not only as a chart-topping performer but also as a cultural bridge between Caribbean and African creative spaces—an influence that appears set to grow even stronger in the years ahead.
