In a powerful gesture of cultural unity and Afrocentric cooperation, King Nana Anim Obiri, the Culture Ambassador in the Office of the President of Ghana, has officially declared reggae stalwart Sizzla Kalonji as the Rastafari Chief of Development for Repatriation to Ghana. The historic announcement, made during the King’s recent visit to Jamaica, signals a renewed push to encourage members of the Jamaican and Rastafarian communities to consider Ghana as a destination for repatriation. This appointment aligns with Sizzla’s long-standing advocacy for a return to Africa, a core theme in his music.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport, Olivia Grange, took to social media to share the news, describing it as a significant moment for both Jamaica and Ghana. “The main purpose of the visit of the Ghanaian royal to Jamaica was to declare Sizzla Kalonji as Rastafari Chief of Development for Repatriation to Ghana,” she wrote. King Nana Anim Obiri emphasized that this initiative would not only bring cultural enrichment but also economic and social development, encouraging skilled personnel and students from Jamaica to settle and contribute to Ghana’s growth.

During his visit, King Nana Anim Obiri and Sizzla engaged in several ceremonial and spiritual activities, including a traditional Ras Tafari Sabbath celebration and a visit to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Kingston. The two also held discussions with Minister Grange and other officials, where topics like reparations and the establishment of a unified body to represent Rastafari interests were highlighted. Minister Grange reaffirmed the need for a “Rastafari Secretariat” that would streamline advocacy efforts on a global scale.

King Nana Anim Obiri’s first visit to Jamaica concluded on a high note, as he was presented with a copy of Tacky’s Revolt, a book detailing the revolutionary history of enslaved Africans in Jamaica, led by Ghanaian-born Chief Tacky. The King expressed his anticipation to host Sizzla in Ghana soon, marking the start of what could be a transformative partnership between the two nations.
