Dancehall superstar Sean Paul has struck gold once again in the United Kingdom, further cementing his legacy as one of Jamaica’s most globally successful artistes. His 2001 hit Gimme The Light has officially been certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), surpassing 400,000 units in combined sales and streams as of Friday, January 9. The milestone arrives just a week after the Grammy-winning star made history with his 10th UK Platinum single, Like Glue, reinforcing his status as the most-certified Jamaican artiste in British chart history.
Originally released as part of Sean Paul’s Billboard-charting album Dutty Rock, Gimme The Light played a pivotal role in launching the deejay into international superstardom. The track, produced by Miami-based Black Shadow Records and built on the infectious Buzz riddim, became a global club staple in the early 2000s. Beyond its UK success—where it peaked at No. 5—the single charted across Europe, Australia and Canada, while also making a strong impact on the US charts, including Top 5 placements on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.
The latest certification underlines the enduring power of Sean Paul’s catalogue, which continues to attract new listeners more than two decades on. From Dutty Rock’s influence on the globalisation of dancehall to his ongoing dominance on streaming platforms, the deejay’s music remains both culturally relevant and commercially potent. As 2026 unfolds, Sean Paul isn’t just celebrating nostalgia—he’s extending a legacy that still commands charts, playlists and dance floors worldwide.
