Nearly 15 years after its release, Sean Paul’s global crossover hit Got 2 Luv U featuring Alexis Jordan is still making history. The 2011 smash has officially earned Platinum certification in the United Kingdom from the British Phonographic Industry after surpassing 600,000 units sold, while collectively generating more than 1 billion streams and views across YouTube and Spotify, cementing its place among the biggest international dancehall crossovers of the digital era.
Originally released in 2011, “Got 2 Luv U” quickly became one of the standout records from Sean Paul’s fifth studio album, Tomahawk Technique. The track’s official music video, which premiered on YouTube on September 15, 2011, has now amassed more than 590 million views alone. Meanwhile, the song has generated over 351 million Spotify streams, with additional lyric videos, live performances and user-generated uploads helping push its combined digital footprint past the one billion mark globally.
The Platinum certification marks another major milestone in Sean Paul’s remarkable UK success story. The single was first certified Silver in 2013 before achieving Gold status in July 2022 after crossing 400,000 units. It now becomes the dancehall superstar’s 10th Platinum-certified solo single in Britain, reinforcing his enduring popularity in one of his strongest overseas markets. Several of his biggest hits, including “Get Busy,” “Temperature,” “No Lie” featuring Dua Lipa, and “Breathe” with Blu Cantrell, have also secured multi-Platinum success in the UK.
Produced by acclaimed Norwegian duo Stargate, made up of Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, the track has an interesting backstory. The song was originally written by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic as an unreleased breakup record titled “Not To Love You.” Sean Paul later reworked the track, adding two new verses and reshaping the concept, while Alexis Jordan retained Tedder’s chorus and third verse with refreshed lyrics. The result was a global pop-dancehall fusion that resonated across radio, clubs and streaming platforms worldwide.
As streaming continues to breathe new life into catalogue hits, “Got 2 Luv U” stands as another reminder of Sean Paul’s lasting influence on global music culture. Nearly a decade and a half later, the Jamaican hitmaker remains one of dancehall’s most commercially successful and internationally recognised figures.
