Dancehall artiste Intence has opened 2026 with a defining career moment, releasing his long-awaited debut album VOYAGE on January 1 via VP Records. The 16-track project made an immediate impact, debuting at No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes Reggae Albums chart and currently holding the No. 5 position on Jamaica’s Apple Music Top Albums chart — a strong showing both at home and abroad, even as it has since slipped off the U.S. listing. The release marks a major statement for the gritty lyricist, whose rise from Kingston’s eastern inner-city community of Tavern, Papine, has been anything but ordinary.
VOYAGE continues a New Year’s Day tradition Intence has maintained since 2018, but this time the annual drop arrives as a fully realised body of work. The album is rooted in lived experience, drawing heavily from themes of survival, ambition and the lasting impact of trauma. Balancing introspection with street-level realism, Intence sharpens his signature delivery while expanding his sonic range through collaborations with Tarrus Riley, Jah Cure, Bad Boy Timz, Tabeta Cshae and Countree Hype.
One of the project’s early standouts, “Poverty” featuring Tarrus Riley, earned placement on Spotify’s New Music Friday US playlist, while previously released tracks “Lesson”, “B.P.P.E.” and “Like U” add continuity for long-time supporters. The album also arrived alongside a short film and music video directed by AKA.RUPPI / NOWorNEVER, giving visual depth to VOYAGE’s narrative and reinforcing its cinematic ambition.
Meanwhile, Intence’s profile continues to rise beyond Jamaica. REVOLT has cited him as part of a new wave reshaping modern dancehall, Billboard has repeatedly spotlighted his releases, and The New York Times critic Jody Rosen famously described his 2021 hit “Yahoo Boyz” as “the biggest dancehall smash of 2021.” Following 2025’s Sólo Chicas EP and earlier projects like Public Enemy No. 1 and Wounded, VOYAGE feels less like an arrival and more like a confirmation — Intence is no longer emerging. He is charting his own course.
