Reggae singer Tarrus Riley has received one of the biggest honours of his career after the City of Lauderdale Lakes in South Florida officially proclaimed June 5, 2026, as “Tarrus Riley Day” during the 2026 Caribbean American Unity Fest. The internationally acclaimed singer was recognised for inspiring audiences worldwide through socially conscious music, cultural pride, and community-driven messaging, further cementing his status as one of reggae’s most respected modern voices.
The proclamation was presented by Mayor Veronica Edwards Phillips on behalf of the Lauderdale Lakes City Commission, which praised Riley’s longstanding contribution to music and positive representation of Caribbean culture. “Tarrus Riley’s music has inspired millions through messages of unity, empowerment, love, and cultural pride,” Edwards Phillips stated during the ceremony. “His commitment to uplifting communities through his artistry and philanthropic efforts embodies the spirit of the Caribbean American Unity Fest and reflects values that resonate deeply within our community.”
Born Omar Tarrus Riley in The Bronx, New York, and raised in Jamaica, the singer has spent more than two decades building a catalogue that blends roots reggae, lovers rock, and socially conscious themes. As the son of reggae legend Jimmy Riley, the award-winning artiste has successfully carried a multigenerational legacy into the modern era while carving out his own global identity. Hits including She’s Royal, Stay With You, Contagious, Start Anew, and Protect the People have helped make him a staple on the international reggae circuit.
Meanwhile, Riley’s influence extends beyond music. Songs such as Shaka Zulu Pickney have highlighted themes of Black identity and education, while his broader body of work has consistently promoted empowerment and social awareness among younger audiences. Over the years, he has earned accolades from the Youth View Awards, EME Awards, and Reggae Academy Awards, while also performing at major events including Reggae Sumfest in Jamaica and Denmark’s Roskilde Festival.
Riley headlined this year’s Caribbean American Unity Fest, one of South Florida’s premier celebrations of Caribbean culture, bringing together music lovers, families, and members of the diaspora community. His recognition by the City of Lauderdale Lakes reflects reggae’s continued global reach and cultural relevance, as well as Riley’s enduring impact as both an entertainer and cultural ambassador. With his international presence still growing, the honour marks yet another milestone in a career defined by consistency, consciousness, and timeless reggae music.
