The Government of Jamaica has officially announced a revamped format and new date for the much-publicised “I Love Jamaica” fundraising concert, set for Sunday, November 16. The event — now transformed into a virtual Telethon — will feature performances by Christopher Martin, Masicka, and rising star Nigy Boy, among others, with proceeds going toward national recovery efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.

Culture Minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange confirmed the updates during a press briefing on Monday, explaining that the concert will be broadcast live from the CPTC studios between 3:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The change from the previously planned in-person event at the National Stadium Car Park comes amid public debate and logistical challenges following the hurricane’s widespread destruction. “We initially announced a concert at the Stadium Car Park and Mas Camp, but we’re now doing a virtual concert and Telethon,” Grange said, noting that the online format allows for broader participation from the Jamaican diaspora and international supporters.

The Telethon marks a strategic shift following the mixed public reaction to the original “Jamaica Love” concert announcement earlier this week, which many criticised as “insensitive” given the ongoing recovery. However, Minister Grange emphasised that the virtual model aligns better with the country’s current mood and ensures that “every Jamaican, wherever they are in the world, can contribute and be part of rebuilding.” She also revealed that global entertainers, including non-Jamaican acts, have expressed interest in joining the cause, either through virtual performances or promotional endorsements.

Adding to the momentum, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has partnered with the Ministry, with cricket legend Chris Gayle fronting the overseas campaign. Former prime ministers PJ Patterson and Bruce Golding have also been tapped to lend their support, alongside leaders from key sectors. The government hopes the initiative will raise an initial US$1 million to fund rebuilding projects across communities hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa.

As excitement builds, the “I Love Jamaica” concert series is shaping up to be both a unifying celebration of Jamaican culture and a global call to action for recovery. With its mix of music, patriotism, and purpose, the event aims to remind the world that Jamaica’s greatest strength lies in its resilience — and in the love that binds its people together.
