The Grammy-winning anthem, which defined an era of socially conscious reggae, has officially been certified platinum in the United Kingdom — marking Marley’s first-ever UK platinum plaque and his second overall. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) confirmed the milestone on Friday, October 3, celebrating over 600,000 units in combined sales and streams.
Released in 2005, Welcome to Jamrock served as the lead single and title track from Marley’s Grammy-winning album of the same name. Built around a haunting sample of Ini Kamoze’s 1984 classic World-A-Reggae (produced by Sly & Robbie), the song instantly resonated with global audiences for its raw depiction of Jamaica’s inner-city struggles. It stormed international charts—reaching No. 13 in the UK, No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, and top 20 placements on multiple genre charts—solidifying Jr Gong’s reputation as a torchbearer of modern reggae.
This new certification adds another jewel to Marley’s decorated catalogue. His first platinum plaque came courtesy of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issued in 2017 for his 2012 collaboration with Skrillex, Make It Bun Dem, which also went gold in the UK just last week. Other notable BPI honours include Road to Zion (silver, May 2025), Distant Relatives with Nas (silver, 2016), and the Welcome to Jamrock album itself (gold, 2006). The timeless single has also struck gold in Brazil and earned a coveted spot at No. 270 on Pitchfork’s list of the Top 500 Songs of the 2000s.
Beyond its accolades, Welcome to Jamrock has achieved pop culture immortality. It’s featured in blockbuster video games like FIFA 06, FIFA 23, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix, and The Sims 2: Bon Voyage—where it’s even recorded in the game’s quirky Simlish language. The song’s 20-year endurance reflects not only Damian Marley’s global influence but also reggae’s lasting power to cross borders and generations.
