Telecommunications giant Digicel has announced a major shake-up of its regional operations, with the immediate closure of its popular digital news platform, Loop News, and plans to close its regional sports platform, SportsMax, by August 8, 2025. The announcement signals a decisive shift in the company’s long-term strategy, moving away from consumer-focused content and placing a renewed emphasis on enterprise and digital service solutions. According to Digicel, the restructuring is part of a broader effort to position the company at the forefront of cloud computing, cybersecurity, compliance, and digital advertising.
The closure of Loop News ends an 11-year run for the platform, which had grown into a trusted source of real-time news and in-depth coverage across the Caribbean. From political developments to community features, Loop became a staple for millions of users seeking accessible and timely journalism. Its absence leaves a significant gap in the digital media ecosystem, particularly in smaller nations where the platform often served as a primary news outlet. “We deeply appreciate the incredible work done by our teams… and the loyalty of our audiences,” Digicel said in a statement issued Tuesday.
Also on the chopping block is SportsMax, the region’s flagship sports broadcaster since its launch in 2002. Known for its live coverage of international leagues, local championships, and exclusive interviews, the channel not only brought Caribbean sports fans closer to the action but also helped launch the careers of numerous sports commentators and journalists. Its planned closure marks the end of an era in Caribbean sports broadcasting.
Digicel stated that all affected employees across the Caribbean have already been notified, with transition support being provided in line with local labour regulations. While the company expressed gratitude for its staff and audience, it emphasised that the decision—though difficult—was necessary to ensure long-term sustainability in a rapidly evolving digital marketplace. The company now plans to channel its resources into Trend Media and recently acquired tech firm Symptai, both of which are expected to anchor Digicel’s next phase of digital expansion.
The move reflects a growing industry trend where telecoms are retreating from traditional content models to capitalize on rising demand for digital infrastructure and business solutions. Still, for Caribbean audiences, the departure of Loop News and SportsMax marks more than just a corporate pivot—it’s the closing chapter for two cultural cornerstones that helped shape the region’s digital identity for over two decades.
