Dancehall star Alkaline prevailed at New Rules Festival this past weekend, delivering what many are calling the best performance of his career—just days after facing public backlash over a widely criticized interview with veteran journalist Cliff Hughes. Held at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium, the Jamaican leg of the festival saw the Vendetta boss take the stage at 2:25 a.m., where he unleashed a high-energy set that not only silenced skeptics but reignited his bond with fans in a big way. From start to finish, Alkaline commanded the stage with confidence and charisma, connecting with the audience in a way that critics say has been missing from some of his recent shows.

Unlike previous appearances where he was often distant or reserved, Alkaline appeared fully present—animated, engaged, and in total control of the moment. His delivery of hits from across his expanding catalogue drew massive sing-alongs and thunderous cheers. “Mi nah tell no lie—Alka come out strong tonight, mi like it,” one concertgoer remarked, summing up the prevailing mood of the night. Midway through the set, he even pulled off a wardrobe change, without losing momentum or intensity. While he made no mention of the recent media criticism, his stage presence said enough—this was Alkaline on a mission.

But New Rules Festival 2025 was more than just a comeback vehicle for the Vendetta leader—it was a showcase of dancehall’s dynamic present and promising future. Tifa delivered one of the night’s standout sets, drawing from her catalogue of classics to resounding crowd appreciation. Munga Honourable also gave a compelling performance, reminding fans of his enduring lyrical prowess. Rising star Armanii earned his moment with a charged performance that won over the crowd, though not without controversy—he took lyrical jabs at Valiant, Walk-N-Talk, and DJ Mac, adding some spice to an already charged lineup.

Other acts that graced the stage included Intence, Silk Boss, Brysco, and Knoxx, each bringing their own flavour to the night. A recurring theme among many of the performers was the lack of institutional support for real talent in the industry, with several pausing their sets to publicly thank Alkaline for using his platform to elevate emerging voices. The unity on display added a sense of purpose to the event, transforming it from a typical concert into a statement of intent.

With high production value, a packed venue, and diverse talent across generations of dancehall, New Rules Festival reaffirmed its position as a cultural mainstay. And at the center of it all was Alkaline—re-energized, refocused, and reclaiming his place in the spotlight, not through words, but through performance.
