Despite being behind bars, embattled dancehall artiste Squash is letting his voice be heard—this time, through a brand-new EP. The Montego Bay-born deejay, currently incarcerated in the United States on gun-related and immigration charges, has released a 9-track project titled Hate Being Famous. The EP, which dropped on May 16, is already making inroads throughout the diaspora, with three of its singles surging on YouTube’s Trending Music chart in Jamaica. “Burn” has scorched its way to the No. 1 spot, while “Leaf Of Life”—a collaboration with Malie Don and Byron Messia—and “No Emotions” are holding firm at No. 2 and No. 7, respectively. Collectively, the three tracks have already amassed over 1.5 million views, signalling strong support from fans despite his current legal predicament.

The project, released under Hemton Music, Salkey Records, and 6ixReal Records, and distributed by 21st Hapilos Digital, is a raw reflection of the turmoil and introspection the dancehall star is navigating. Its title—Hate Being Famous—seems to mirror Squash’s conflicted relationship with the spotlight and the pressures that come with it. It also arrives at a pivotal moment in his life: just weeks after his not guilty plea to U.S. gun possession charges and ahead of his next court hearing in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Squash, whose real name is Andrae Maurice Whittaker, was first apprehended on February 24 after Miami Beach police allegedly found him with a modified Glock 19. Matters escalated on March 5, when ICE took him into custody over unresolved immigration issues. Legal experts warn that a conviction could not only lead to prison time but also deportation, which would severely impact his career and future in the U.S. According to Florida-based immigration attorney Richard Campbell, “If convicted, Squash could face not only prison time but also removal from the U.S., which would significantly impact his career.”

While the courtroom battle continues, Squash’s music is proving resilient. Known for tracks like “Trending” and “Ambala,” the 6ixx Boss is once again capturing attention—not just for his legal saga, but for his undeniable ability to connect with listeners. With Hate Being Famous, he offers fans a poignant glimpse into the mental and emotional weight of fame, freedom, and the fight to maintain both.
