As 2025 unfolds, the first quarter of the new year is officially behind us. These past few months have been an incredible period for the dancehall genre, which continues to enjoy a surge in international popularity. This growth is marked by several major accomplishments, including a series of sold-out concerts across the U.S. and U.K. by Buju Banton, Vybz Kartel, Alkaline, and, most recently, Aidonia at the UBS Arena. Their triumphant concerts reflect not only the enduring appeal of dancehall but also its evolution into a dominant force in worldwide music culture. According to the IFPI’s 2024 Global Music Report, reggae and dancehall have steadily climbed the streaming charts, with dancehall seeing a 15% increase in global streams compared to the previous year. The genre’s crossover appeal and the consistent output of its top-tier talent have ensured its seat at the international table.

On the digital frontier, YouTube continues to be a key battleground for visibility, and one name towers above the rest: Chronic Law. The St. Thomas deejay, while not yet filling arenas and stadiums, clinched the No. 1 spot as the most-viewed dancehall artiste in Jamaica for the period May 5, 2024, to May 5, 2025, with an impressive 165 million views. Vybz Kartel—often referred to as the King of Dancehall—follows in second place with 84.3 million views, proving his enduring impact post-incarceration. Rising star Skippa makes a remarkable entry at No. 4, reflecting the genre’s evolving landscape. Here are the top YouTube performers in Jamaica:

  • Chronic Law – 165M views | Top song: “Don’t Fall” – 17M views

  • Vybz Kartel – 84.3M views | Top song: “Comet” – 14M views

  • Masicka – 69.4M views | Top song: “Whites” – 16M views

  • Skippa – 66.1M views | Top song: “Hugo” – 10M views

  • Squash – 64.1M views | Top song: “Big Breeze” – 27M views

  • Alkaline – 50.4M views | Top song: “On Fleek” – 95M views

In the last three months (February 5 – May 5, 2025) alone, digital metrics tell a vibrant story of fan engagement and breakout hits. The genre’s most-watched track during this period is the high-energy remix of “Shake It To The Max (FLY)” by Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea, racking up 4.52 million views. Armanii and Malie Donn’s “8:00 PM” follows with 2.71 million views, while “Ballandor” by Jamal & Cash Code scored 2.37 million views, signalling a strong wave of new talent pushing the genre forward. Masicka’s “Whites” continues to gain momentum with 2.12 million views, and Vybz Kartel’s “God Is The Greatest” closes out the Top 5 with 2.09 million views. With Masicka and Kartel still commanding attention and newcomers making powerful strides, the future of dancehall is as promising as ever. As Chronic Law declared in a recent Instagram post, “Real music still a win. Mi grateful fi di support—di fans dem know di truth.” With the numbers to back it up, 2025 is shaping up to be another banner year for Jamaica’s most globally resonant sound.
