Dancehall artiste Jamal has been released from police custody after being detained for questioning in connection with alleged gang activities. The entertainer, whose real name is Tyvel Dixon, was taken into custody last Friday by officers from Specialised Operations following a performance stint in St. Andrew. Authorities had identified him as a person of interest due to alleged ties to the Dunce gang in Barrett Town, St. James, but confirmed he was not considered a suspect in the ongoing investigation.
Following his release, Jamal wasted no time addressing the controversy. In a statement posted on Instagram, the artiste and his management team firmly denied any criminal involvement. “We want to unequivocally state that Jamal & Jamal Music is not engaged in any illegal activities, nor have ever been,” the statement read. The post further emphasized the artiste’s commitment to ethical business practices, highlighting his contributions to the Jamaican music industry and community. Jamal also expressed confidence in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to handle the matter fairly.
Despite the controversy, Jamal remains focused on his career. The deejay is still slated to perform at Magnum Carousing, the grand finale of Dancehall Week 2025, set for March 2 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston. The highly anticipated event, which features heavyweights like Jada Kingdom, Jah Vinci, Tommy Lee Sparta, and Pamputtae, marks a crucial moment for Jamal, who has seen a surge in popularity in recent months. His latest singles continue to trend on streaming platforms, accumulating over 5 million plays in the last quarter alone.
