Dancehall upstart Jamal aka “Dunce Man“, has come under much scrutiny from some sects of the entertainment fraternity since releasing his “Fully Dunce” freestyle.
In a recent sitdown with THE FIX podcast, the emerging talent now gaining considerable notoriety used the opportunity to address his critics pushing back against the pervasive “dunce culture” saturating Jamaican society.
Speaking with host Ari and Naro, who quizzed him about his thoughts on the resistance from dancehall titan Bounty Killer and others to the new “dunce trend”, he said,
“Fi tell yuh di truth mi cyaah pree Bounty Killer because a Bounty Killer dat yuh see me, a di general dat and everybaddy have dem own opinion, everybaddy view tings different. Suh if Bounty Killer view di dunce ting fi him way yuh cyaah blame him because we nah guh try compete with him or challenge him pon nutt’n pon dat yuh kno wah mi mean. We jus haffi duh weh we a duh and mek di work speak”
Explaining the idea behind his “dunce” concept, Jamal stated,
“Weh mi a bring my dunce ting go, if you consider yourself as somebaddy weh have sense yah guh realise weh mi a deal wid, dat a one a di thing mi seh di fuss time mi seh dunce to you” – he told THE FIX hosts.
He explains further, “Everybaddy jus hear di dunce and come to a conclusion without even hearing my opinion… a bet if mi did seh mi bright dem wudda badmind me and a true! Because if mi did come a pretend like mi go UWI or mi get a proper education yuh know how much people wudda a bash mi and a look pon mi like yow! stop talk weh yuh nuh know man. Now! Mi nuh know nutten dats why mi seh dunce.”
In closing, the entertainer stressed that “Dunce is really about getting active inna learning.”
Jamal is best known for the singles “Millions“, “Fully Dunce“, “Y Not“, “Mr Myers“, and “Big Money.”
