Jamaican vocalist Richie Stephens will headline a benefit concert in Chicago on November 29th, dedicated to raising funds for Lieutenant Stitchie, the Dancehall Governor who is on the road to recovery after suffering a severe brain haemorrhage. The concert, titled Richie for Stitchie, will take place at the Seven Star Lounge, with proceeds going to the Lieutenant Stitchie Foundation Fund to assist with medical expenses. The event will also feature the Indika Reggae Band and the legendary Stone Love Sound, promising an unforgettable night for reggae and dancehall fans. Tickets are priced at US$30.
Lieutenant Stitchie, born Cleve Laing, has made significant strides in his recovery since the health scare. His wife, Sophia Laing, shared that he is “responding to voices that he knows” and showing positive signs. However, the family continues to face substantial medical bills. To date, Stitchie’s GoFundMe account has raised a total of USD 23,055 from over 481 donations, showcasing the immense support from fans globally. Richie Stephens, a long-time friend, has been actively involved in the recovery efforts. “We’re doing everything we can to support Stitchie during this difficult time,” Stephens said in a statement about the concert.
Stitchie, who turned 59 in September, has received an outpouring of support from the entertainment community. Recently, Bounty Killer’s foundation donated USD 10,000 to the cause, with contributions from fellow artists like Shaggy. Bounty Killer emphasized the importance of giving back: “Everybody who come from humble beginning should always have a charity, because we know about unfortunate situations.” This collective support underscores Stitchie’s enduring legacy and impact on Jamaican music, from early hits like “Wear Yuh Size” to his gospel transition in 1997. Fans and artists alike are rallying together to ensure the deejay continues his path to recovery.
