The Jamaican government has been ordered to reimburse incarcerated entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-accused for their legal expenses incurred during the recent appeal to the United Kingdom Privy Council. This ruling comes after the Privy Council overturned the life sentences of the dancehall artist and his associates due to concerns about jury tampering.

Originally convicted in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, the quartet’s appeal to the Jamaican Court of Appeal was unsuccessful in 2020, leading them to seek recourse from the higher authority of the Privy Council.

The Privy Council’s decision not only quashed the murder convictions but also mandated that the case be remitted to Jamaica’s Appeal Court for further consideration. Set for June 10, the hearing will determine whether a retrial should be ordered or the men should be set free. The ruling also stipulates that Jamaica must cover all court costs incurred by the appellants, marking a significant financial obligation on the part of the government.

Upon the Privy Council’s decision, King Charles signed an order from the Court at Buckingham Palace, affirming the quashing of the convictions and directing Jamaica to reimburse the appellants. This directive was made clear in the formal document, which outlined the specifics of the ruling and the obligations of the Jamaican government to ensure its compliance.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck confirmed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is aware of the government’s responsibility to cover the costs related to Vybz Kartel’s Privy Council appeal. Chuck emphasized that this obligation is not uncommon and that the exact amount to be paid will be determined in consultation with the DPP’s office.

Alessandra LaBeach, one of Kartel’s attorneys, expressed satisfaction with the ruling, noting that the appellants anticipate receiving compensation for their legal expenses. As the case progresses, attention will remain focused on the upcoming hearing and its implications for Vybz Kartel and his co-accused.
