In a groundbreaking move aimed at safeguarding the welfare of Jamaica’s entertainment and creative practitioners, the government is set to roll out health, personal accident and life insurance programmes in the upcoming fiscal year 2024/25. This significant announcement was made by the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, during a recent session of the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives.
Addressing the pressing need for such insurance plans within the industry, Minister Grange emphasized the pivotal role they play in providing financial security to practitioners. She underscored the unfortunate reality of losing esteemed figures within the music industry and the challenges often faced in covering funeral expenses. Minister Grange’s commitment to implementing a viable solution reflects a proactive approach by the government in addressing the concerns of practitioners within the entertainment, culture, and creative sectors.
In anticipation of the programme’s launch, the Minister urged practitioners to take proactive steps by registering on the Ministry’s e-registry website. Emphasizing that registration will be a prerequisite for accessing the benefits; she highlighted the importance of active participation from practitioners to avail themselves of the insurance coverage.
Drawing parallels with the existing Jamaica Athletes’ Insurance Plan, which caters to the needs of national sports representatives, Minister Grange outlined the comprehensive nature of the upcoming insurance programmes. From covering diagnostic procedures to maternity benefits, the insurance plans aim to provide a wide array of essential services to support the holistic well-being of creative practitioners.
