Jamaica’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn, has intensified the debates around the ongoing legal saga by announcing her office’s intention to pursue a retrial for incarcerated dancehall sensations Vybz Kartel and Shawn Storm, along with their co-accused. This revelation comes in the wake of the recent overturning of their 2014 life sentences by the United Kingdom-based Privy Council, citing concerns of jury tampering in the original trial regarding the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

“The Privy Council’s decision has set the stage for a pivotal moment in Jamaican legal history,” remarked Llewellyn while speaking on Nationwide News on Monday morning. She expressed confidence in the judicial system, stating, “I believe we would be obliged to pursue a retrial given the strength of the case for the prosecution that was put up.” Despite looming retirement plans, Llewellyn remains resolute in her commitment to upholding legal standards and ensuring due process.

Vybz Kartel, buoyed by the recent developments, articulated his optimism, anticipating a favourable outcome from the Court of Appeal. “I am confident that the Court of Appeal in Jamaica will do the right thing in the name of equity, fairness and justice and free us,” he asserted in his first official statement. He questioned the necessity of a retrial, stating, “Some people have expressed their concern to me that a retrial may be ordered, but to them, I say (albeit with my limited knowledge of the law) ‘What is there to retry’?”

Llewellyn underscored that the decision to pursue a retrial hinges on factors such as the seriousness of the crime and public interest, emphasizing the impartiality of prosecutorial decisions. “The public has to be aware that the issue of retrial, as far as prosecutors are concerned, has nothing to do with emotions. It has nothing to do with who the accused is,” she clarified. “It has to do with the seriousness of the offence, the public interest, [or] how extensive it may be to mount the retrial. It doesn’t even have to do with what the likely verdict may be.”

Meanwhile, Vybz Kartel’s legal team, led by lawyer Isat Buchanan, is poised to navigate the intricate legal terrain with plans to seek bail for their client. Buchanan acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timeline for Kartel’s potential release on bail and is awaiting directives from the court. Despite the complexities ahead, Buchanan remains vigilant, awaiting further instructions and signalling readiness to navigate the legal proceedings ahead.

As the legal saga unfolds, the eyes of the nation remain fixated on the courtroom, awaiting the next chapter in the high-profile case that has captivated Jamaica and beyond.
