International dancehall superstar Shaggy, Chairman of the Island Music Conference (IMC), delivered a stimulating keynote address on the imperative nature of assembling the right team within the music industry.

Addressing a diverse audience of aspiring and established artists at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston, the entertainer, whose given name is Orville Burrell, underscored the pivotal role that a cohesive and visionary team plays in an artist’s success trajectory. He emphasized the distinction between merely attaining stardom and effecting a significant cultural shift, attributing the latter to the presence of a superstar supported by a dedicated team sharing a unified vision.

Burrell’s message resonated deeply within the Jamaican music scene, as he highlighted the innate talent and charisma abundant among local artists. He lauded Jamaican talent for its multifaceted nature, recognizing artists who possess not only exceptional musical abilities but also charisma, charm, work ethic, and versatility in performance and communication. Moreover, he stressed the necessity of nurturing these talents within a supportive framework that encompasses not only managerial expertise but also creative direction and production acumen.

In his address, Burrell showcased a profound appreciation for the rich tapestry of Jamaican talent, characterizing it as a breeding ground for stars across various genres. He explained the challenges faced by artists in honing their craft and navigating the intricate landscape of the music industry. Drawing from his own experiences, particularly the unexpected success of his hit single “Boombastic,” Burrell underscored the importance of self-belief and authenticity. He encouraged artists to embrace their unique identity and artistic vision, eschewing emulation in favour of genuine self-expression.

The Island Music Conference, now in its second annual iteration, serves as a pivotal platform for industry stakeholders to converge, exchange insights, and chart the course for the future of music. With an extensive lineup of panels and workshops featuring luminaries from the global music sphere, the conference promises to delve into a myriad of pertinent topics, including the transformative role of artificial intelligence, effective branding strategies, digital marketing innovations, and prudent financial management practices.
