Amidst the fervent discussions sparked by Jamaica’s 61st Independence celebrations, a new discourse has taken centre stage, championed by Jamaican actor and broadcaster Jason Williams.

A well-known presenter and producer at ONStage TV, Williams has directed his attention towards the Government of Jamaica (GOJ), highlighting what he perceives as a glaring oversight in not recognizing media luminaries Anthony Miller and Winford Williams for their unparalleled contributions to the local and regional entertainment realm.

Williams leveraged his official Instagram account to voice his concerns, raising a pivotal question: “All these years in Media and so much contributions to the entertainment landscape and no government of Jamaica has seen it fit to give Winford Williams nor Anthony Miller even a merit for their contributions??? KMT.”

Both Anthony Miller of Entertainment Report (ER) and Winford Williams of ONStage TV have been instrumental figures in shaping the entertainment landscape over the past three decades. Their roles as influential entertainment journalists and broadcasters have been consequential in informing the public about current events and nurturing talents. Despite their profound impact, successive governments have yet to bestow them with national awards, leading to a sense of disappointment resonating within the entertainment community and beyond.

Throughout their careers, Miller and Williams have provided a platform for emerging and established talents, conducted insightful interviews, and offered expert commentary on the ever-evolving music industry. Their unwavering dedication and influence have earned them the respect of an ever-expanding viewership over the years.

Following Jason Williams’ proclamation, numerous noted personalities from the entertainment sphere and media industry have joined the discourse, primarily agreeing that the matter raised by Williams is valid. Some contributors have shed light on the procedural aspect and have encouraged Williams to explore the appropriate channels to achieve the desired recognition.

The upcoming ceremony, slated for October 16, 2023, will reveal the recipients of national awards as part of Jamaica’s National Heroes Day commemoration. Guided by the National Honours and Awards Act, introduced on July 18, 1969, the nation acknowledges individuals whose service and contributions have left a significant and meaningful imprint on the nation’s collective life.
