Reggae luminary Beres Hammond, renowned for his soul-stirring melodies and emotive lyrics that have left an indelible mark on fans spanning generations, is poised to receive the esteemed Elite Icon Award at the upcoming Caribbean Music Awards (CMA) later this month.
Set to unfold in the vibrant New York City, the CMA will spotlight Caribbean culture in the “Big Apple” on Thursday, August 31, at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. This inaugural event, orchestrated by the Caribbean Elite Group, publishers of the reputed “Caribbean Elite Magazine,” will be hosted by the acclaimed Haitian rapper and actor Wyclef Jean.
Celebrating excellence across a diverse spectrum of genres, including Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, Kompa, and Zouk, the awards ceremony will bestow recognition upon over twenty remarkable artists in coveted categories such as “Album of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” “Producer of the Year,” “Lifetime Achievement,” “Video of the Year,” “People’s Choice,” and “Caribbean Music Event of the Year.”
Beres Hammond, no stranger to attaining accolades, has etched his name as a prominent figure within Jamaica’s reggae landscape, gaining particular acclaim for his soulful lovers’ rock music. Although his journey began in the 1970s, it was the 1990s that witnessed the pinnacle of his career. Launching a solo career, he debuted with the album “Soul Reggae” in 1976, producing enchanting ballads like “One Step Ahead” and “I’m in Love.” Establishing his own label, Harmony House Records, in 1985, he propelled himself with hits such as “Groovy Little Thing” and “What One Dance Can Do,” making his mark in the burgeoning dancehall scene.
Hammond’s international acclaim surged with tracks like “Settling Down” and “How Can We Ease the Pain.” Throughout the 1990s, he continued his triumphant journey, crafting hits like “Tempted to Touch,” “Is This a Sign,” and “Respect to You Baby.” Albums like “Music Is Life” and “Love Has No Boundaries” showcased his remarkable versatility. His impact culminated in being honoured with the Order of Jamaica in 2013 and receiving a Grammy Award nomination for his album “One Love, One Life.”
