Reggae icon Freddie McGregor was honoured with the prestigious Red Stripe Living Legend Award during Night Two of Reggae Sumfest, receiving resounding cheers and applause from the audience.Â
Red Stripe Brand Manager Nathan Nelms commended McGregor’s enduring legacy and significant contributions to music, presenting him with the esteemed award.
In a heartfelt moment on stage, surrounded by his sons Daniel ‘Chino’ McGregor and Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor, the Big Ship captain performed for the first time on Jamaican soil since suffering a stroke in Florida last November.
Freddie McGregor was deeply touched and thankful to both God and the audience for their prayers and support during his health battle. Although he was initially unsure about performing, he revealed that the spirit of Christ gave him the strength to take the stage at Reggae Sumfest.
With the support of his children, McGregor gave a captivating performance, delighting the audience with some of his most favoured hits, including “Every Little Thing,” “If You Wanna Go,” “Push Comes to Shove,” and “To Be Poor Is a Crime,” among others.
The Red Stripe Living Legend Award, introduced in January 2023, recognizes outstanding artists who have made exemplary contributions to the music industry. Previous recipients include Buju Banton, Marcia Griffiths, and Beres Hammond, further solidifying McGregor’s place among the reggae greats.
