Dancehall artist Timoy Jones, popularly known as Teejay, has achieved another significant milestone in his career by amassing over one million followers on his official Instagram account.
This achievement places him in an elite league of fellow Jamaican personalities, namely Popcaan, Jada Kingdom, Shenseea, Spice, Sean Paul, Usain Bolt, Vybz Kartel, Mavado and Yanique ‘Curvy Diva’, who have also surpassed this mark. Teejay’s rise in popularity can be attributed in part to the immense success of his viral hit “Drift,” which has garnered international attention and secured him lucrative publishing and recording deals with American-based music outfit Warner Music Group.
During a recent Instagram Live session, Teejay took the opportunity to address the issue of infighting within the dancehall community, urging his peers to improve and unite for the betterment of the industry. He referred to the dancehall scene as “one big dutty place” and stressed the importance of unity as a critical factor in achieving success.
The Montegonian shared that he became aware of the negative practices within dancehall after leaving his hometown of Montego Bay and relocating to Kingston. Despite the challenges he faced, Teejay attributes his success to hard work and unwavering determination.
Looking ahead, Teejay expressed his vision of organizing a dancehall tour featuring emerging talents from Jamaica, aiming to promote the culture globally. His plea for unity aligns with recent calls made by other notable figures in the industry, including Aidonia, Bugle, and Demarco, who have also emphasized the need for collaboration and an end to violence in Jamaica.
These collective appeals underscore the significance of fostering support and cooperation within the local entertainment scene, not only to uplift the genre but also to contribute positively to the nation as a whole.
