The Jamaican entertainment industry and the local dancehall community’s once rigid values and principles are gradually diminishing with each passing day as more practitioners embrace the concepts of openmindedness, inclusivity and sexual liberties, particularly from the Alphabet community.
Last June, Spice and Shenseea, two prominent female dancehall figures, openly supported the community through their music, with both headlining at Pride festivals in New York and Toronto, respectively.
Earlier this month, Pamputtae, another female deejay, joined the LGBTQ campaign currently infiltrating the dancehall space with the announcement that she will be performing at Pride Toronto’s Blockorama After Dark, scheduled for June 24th in Canada. She is set to appear on the Bud Light Wellesley Stage.
The event is an annual dance party for Alphabet individuals of colour.
Via an Instagram post, Pamputtae noted how missed opportunities are a common occurrence, stating, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it’s dressed in coverall and looks like work. With that being said, I’ll be performing live at PrideToronto.”
Though still an emerging talent, Pamputtae has been experiencing a career uptick, with a performance at last December’s Sting and securing a feature on Skeng’s Likkle Miss Remix (The Fine Nine Remix) orchestrated by Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj.
